Man dies after fatal hit-and-run near Courtenay, police investigating
· CHEKThe Comox Valley RCMP is asking for the public’s help in identifying a vehicle involved in a deadly hit-and-run in Courtenay on Thursday night.
Police say they were called to the intersection of Minto Road and the Comox Valley Parkway just before 11 p.m. for a report of an injured cyclist.
Mounties say a passerby spotted the injured cyclist and called 911.
First responders, including police, paramedics and the Courtenay Fire Department arrived and provided emergency medical assistance. However, after being transported to hospital, the cyclist died of his injuries.
Courtenay Deputy Fire Chief Stephane Dionne says it was clear the cyclist was struck by something and didn’t fall and injure themselves on their own due to the condition they were in.
“We had the bicycle in bad shape and the patient was having major injuries throughout their body,” he said.

RCMP investigators say they’re still trying to determine when exactly the cyclist was hit. Police believe the hit-and-run took place at the Courtenay intersection sometime between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m.
“We are asking anyone who was travelling along the Comox Valley Parkway, or surrounding area, to carefully review their dashcam footage and come forward if they were in the area during this time and may have captured something,” said Const. Monika Terragni of the Comox Valley RCMP.
Police say the vehicle is expected to have front-end damage. Meanwhile, the cyclist was riding a red and white “specialized bicycle” along the parkway when he was hit.
People are asked to review their videos from as early as 9 p.m. Thursday.
“We are also asking that anyone with any information that may be relevant to our investigation come forward, this includes the driver of the vehicle involved in the collision, any passengers, and anyone who might have noticed some very recent, potentially suspicious, damage to a vehicle,” said Terragni.
Investigators were at the scene Thursday night and are expected to revisit the area Friday.
