Arsenal icon Ian Wright has admitted his former side has to believe they can win the 2023/24 Premier League title. On Saturday evening against Newcastle United at Emirates Stadium, Mikel Arteta watched his players respond in the best possible way to a defeat to Porto in the Champions League.

Goals from Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Jakub Kiwior all came after the Gunners forced a Sven Botman own goal, with Joe Willock grabbing a late consolation goal for the visitors. "It shows how much we want it," Arteta said of his players following the 4-1 victory. "Credit to the staff as well for making all the effort they do to recover the players.

"But I could sense it from the moment we were in Porto that we were ready for the game and we wanted it the next day because we could have done so much better there. It’s great to see that reaction and the support we got in the stadium, and we go again.

"We’re in a good moment. Players are performing individually, it is not any secret. Things are flowing. We’re scoring goals in different ways and especially we want more. When we score one, we want two, or three, or four. I love that mentality from the team."

Arsenal are now just two points off league leaders Liverpool, with Manchester City between them both after picking up a narrow win against Bournemouth over the weekend. Up next for Arsenal is a trip to Sheffield United before a home clash against Brentford, which arrives as Man City and Liverpool go head-to-head.

Despite the form of Liverpool and Man City, Wright believes there is no reason currently as to why Arsenal cannot win the league over their rivals. "It is looking good," he said on Match of the Day. "Learning from last season and we've just got to keep doing what we're doing."

Asked if they could win the title, Wright replied: "Yes, we have to think we can win it; otherwise, what are we doing? We're scoring goals left, right and centre." As Wright states, it is Arsenal's form in front of goal that could play a crucial role in deciding who wins the league.

From their last six games, Arsenal have now scored 25 goals after another four arrived in the win against Newcastle, which actually saw them overtake both of their title rivals to have the highest goal difference.
